Origins, Genetics, History
Granddaddy Purple Type: Granddaddy Purple is a hybrid of the following strains:
- Big Bud
- Purple Urkle
Granddaddy Purple hails from the California marijuana scene, perhaps the most advanced in the United States in the growing and uses of marijuana. Granddaddy Purple is a cross between Big Bud which boasted big ole flowering buds full of sticky trichomes and THC, and Purple Urkle, known for its intoxicating purple tinge indicating the presence of cannabinoids and terpenes that help the plant fight cooler temperatures.
Granddaddy Purple’s history is easy to follow. It was created in 2003 by a grower by the name of Ken Estes who experimented with crossing Big Bud and Purple Urkle to come up with not the child but the Granddaddy of purps. Purple Urkle bequeathed the fruity, grape taste to Granddaddy Purple while Big Bud gave its busty buds to the plant. The purple buds are blanketed in white, THC-rich trichomes.
Appearance and Smell
Granddaddy Purple is renowned for its big purple-tinged buds. The purple tinge is a reaction to mild cool temperatures, which produces terpenoids, cannabinoids, and pigments to protect the plant. This is a short, stout plant with an impressive yield.
It’s famous for its fruity grape flavor. This weed has a loud, skunk smell that will overwhelm the nostrils and fill the room so be careful to put it somewhere where the smell does not attract unwanted attention. Hints of spice and ginger may also be present, producing a delightful experience.
How to Grow Granddaddy Purple Cannabis Seeds or Cuttings
Growing weed from Granddaddy Purple cannabis seeds and cuttings is of medium difficulty. Some say its easy as pie. You will need basic gardening skills but you can get away without having the green thumb. The plants are short, less than about 30 inches tall, but stout and with big buds.
Indoors, these plants can be induced to flower within 8 to 11 weeks. They will yield an impressive 19 ounces per square meter of space.
Outdoors, Granddaddy Purple will thrive and yield around 17 ounces per plant of good, sticky, purple weed. Growing outdoors gives the plant a chance to interact with natural sun, wind, insects, and other plants and mycelium underground. This produces a more natural profile of cannabinoids and terpenes but makes it a bit harder to control pests. Whichever method you choose, you will need some slight cool temperatures at just the right time to get the purple to really come out. It grows well in a humid climate, experiencing mild cool temperatures which turn the buds purple just before harvest in the middle of October.
Medicinal Marijuana Review
Granddaddy Purple is the perfect medical strain. It was made with medical uses close in mind. It packs a strong punch against chronic pain conditions like fibromyalgia. How might it help this particular condition?
Fibromyalgia is a condition of pain sensitization, producing widespread pain at trigger points or in the muscles in general. Patients can become significantly debilitated. Typical treatment includes anti-convulsants like pregabalin and gabapentin. These drugs are said to calm nerve signals; however, they can produce dependence and a withdrawal syndrome. Other patients have found relief with non-drowsy antihistamines like fexofenadine. Many in medical marijuana states in the US seek a relaxing strain of marijuana to treat the condition. Granddaddy Purple is the perfect Indica to calm nerves and relax the entire body. Muscle pain signals will not be able to break through the wall of relaxation and euphoria you get from this weed.

Effects
Granddaddy Purple is known for its potency. THC levels as high as 23% provide most of the potency but is aided by the terpenes and cannabinoids indicated by the purple buds’ pigment. Granddaddy Purp hits you with a body stone that makes you feel like a stone, hence the term. You could be sinking into the couch, fusing with the rest of the universe. Purp is for sure an Indica. If you seek relaxation and meditation, this is the strain for your purposes. It creates a strong, relaxing mental high and a heavy body high that makes you light as a feather and sink like a stone, both. It can also stimulate appetite and induce sleep. If you need something to knock you out, you got it with Granddaddy Purple. Have it with your night-time meal and you’ll be out as the lights.

Oh that’s a creeper! I spent quite some time just lying on my bed, doing nothing and waiting for the effects to come. I realized I took a too small hit and wanted to get up for another one when I suddenly felt this huge wave of sedation. As I understood, I was already high but didn’t even get before I actually tried to do something. It tastes sweet like berries, so cute and good that I thought the high would be light and soft. Instead of this a very heady high came and relaxed me completely. For me Sativa part in it is more powerful, but it didn’t make me energetic. I spent half an hour trying to find my phone that was right near my pillow. Yeah, it’s not a daytime strain, not even in the weekends. This is the price for calming you down: your head feels completely empty, it’s hard to do something useful or think clearly, but everything bad vanishes too! No good, no bad. Negative thoughts, anxieties, problems cannot break through the wall that Granddaddy made. The perfect strain to de-stress after a tough day and slowly fall asleep.
When I bought this strain yesterday I couldn't wait getting home and finally trying it. I was like a kid on Christmas waiting for the presents. Then I read all these nice reviews and decided to try smoking it for all week. But at first let me tell u how it was for the first time... I liked this thick smoke and really sweet under taste but something was wrong. Five minutes passed already and nothing. Ok, I waited for 5 more minutes... Fuck, 15 long minutes passed and no effects! "I must've done something wrong, I gotta get my bong for another.." I thought, but then suddenly The Great Granddaddy Purple in all its beauty kicked in and made my ass meld with the couch. As u can imagine, pain, insomnia, anxiety, depression, nausea I was watching film trailers on youtube, some of them for several times... Granddaddy is not a daytime strain for sure, unless you planned to spend an hour or two re-watching The avengers trailer. You can forget about motivation and productivity, because some invisible force won't let u get your ass off the couch. On the other hand, it helps a lot to resist the desire to find ALL the food in your house and eat it all at once!
